On May 21, according to media reports, Amazon Cloud Services (AWS), the world's largest cloud computing provider, had suspended orders for Nvidia's Hopper chips to await more powerful new chips.
Affected by this, Nvidia's U.S. stocks fell more than 1%.
The report quoted Amazon Cloud Services as saying they had "completely shifted" the order for Nvidia's Grace Hopper super chip and replaced it with its successor Grace Blackwell. The company said the move was "reasonable" given the "small window of time between Grace Hopper and Grace Blackwell."
Previously, in March this year, Nvidia released a new generation of processors called Blackwell, less than a year after its predecessor, Hopper, began shipping to customers. Nvidia CEO Huang Renxun said the new product will be twice as powerful as Hopper in training large language models.
It is reported that chips based on the NVIDIA Hopper architecture, such as its highly sought after H100 GPU, will be fully put into production in September 2022. The Grace Hopper Super Chip (also known as the GH200) integrates several H100 GPUs with high-speed memory, connectivity, and central processing units. Its successor, the GB200, was the first product to leverage Blackwell technology.
Neither Amazon nor Nvidia confirmed the order amount. However, analysts at HSBC estimate that a GB200 chip containing two B100 chips could sell for as much as US$70,000, while an entire server equipped with this new technology could sell for as much as US$3 million.
Amazon Cloud Services continues to provide other Nvidia chips, such as the H100, to its cloud customers. But Amazon's cloud services move, one of Nvidia's largest customers, may unsettle investors, who already worry that technology companies will delay purchases while waiting for Blackwell's launch.
